“That, which sustains us all, must be sustained.”

Besides this quote, I believe Dr. Helen Caldicott said it best, in the most simplistic of terms –

“If you love this planet….”

Since her first works, however many years ago now, she has moved from the nuclear into the ecological. Here is the highlights of her book.

IF YOU LOVE THIS PLANET: A PLAN TO HEAL THE EARTH

Publisher: W.W. Norton & Company (1992); ISBN: 0393308359

“Helen Caldicott has been my inspiration to speak out.” Meryl Streep

Our planet is desperately ill and must be healed. If the human race does not change its present behavior, the ecosphere may be doomed within the next ten years. A renowned anti-nuclear activist for twenty years, Helen Caldicott here turns from the arms race to the race to save the planet, laying out the grim details of ozone depletion, excess energy consumption, pollution, and global warming. The causes: public apathy, corporate greed, and the cynical manipulation of political leaders.

To save the planet we need to change the way we think and behave. Closer contact with, and appropriate reverence for, nature will help to provide simple answers to seemingly complex problems.

If You Love This Planet describes in easy-to-understand language the scientific and medical consequences of the greenhouse effect, ozone depletion, deforestation, species extinction, toxic chemical pollution, nuclear waste, food contamination, and the ever-present threat of nuclear war.

Caldicott, a physician by training, also gives us a prescription for cure – and a cause for hope. We must learn energy efficiency, we must organize politically (voting, she suggests, should be compulsory), and we must hold corporations and governments accountable for their actions. Above all, she says, our fight for the planet will draw its greatest strength from a love for the Earth itself.

For most of my life, I was never a ‘nature girl.’ I was born on a tobacco farm in the east, moved to a city when I was three, and didn’t really go outside very much — when I did, I don’t think I really enjoyed myself, or even noticed nature. We didn’t go on many holidays, but when we did, we went to the mountains for a few days. When we were there, I just remember being in the cabin or walking down mainstreet in the town. I don’t remember much of the “nature” part of the trip.

Now I live in the mountains, and I’m paying attention. Not only do I live in the mountains, but I live in a tourist town (see my blog, Life In A Tourist Town). I have only just begun to appreciate the amazing natural world we live in — being with someone who was born in this area really helps. I realize that I have a fear of nature — of the elements, of the animals, of the bugs (ticks that burrow under the skin), of the steep mountainous terrain (many people have died in this area from falls).

Yet, even with the fear, I can now ‘feel’ the natural world around me, and I am really amazed at how much more I am appreciating our lovely planet.

I don’t know about you…but I WANT clean water for my children and grandchildren, and with the self-love, self-care component of Divine Parenting, I especially want it for myself. I want an abundance of food to eat, especially natural (non-GMO) and non-toxic. I want clean, fresh air to breathe…and on, and on, and on.

So, if I want that, I want to make sure that I help to meet the planet’s needs — to see what Mother Earth and all her species on the planet need to survive, including humans, and be a part of the movement to make sure those needs get met.

How about you?
